    Oh yes, I loved the Japanese trains, and all the staff are so polite too – down to the ticket inspector bowing respectfully to each passenger and to the whole group when he entered and left the carriage!

      I agree. The politeness is overwhelming, as is the constant bowing, sometimes! I also liked the provision of umbrellas outside all the shops in Tokyo, to be left at the next shop visited or when the rain stopped. But (sigh), it would never work here.

    They look a bit intimidating to an inefficient type like me. I’m more for steam trains and cosy individual carriages with leather straps on the window that I could never open or close. But I’d kill for the opportunity to go to Japan. Well, maybe wound slightly…

      Nick was known to mutter under his breath sometimes when we were entering a lift as we never knew who should stop bowing first – that was in Hawaii where we stayed in a Japanese hotel, I went to Japan with two male friends. But I think you’d love the trains, Jo. So totally relaxing. Not having to dust the seats down, or worry about greasy marks getting on your clothes made for a better experience for me.

    We are a backwater in comparison with our HS2 debacle. I remember one of the scare stories in 2014 was that if we were independent HS2 might not come as far as Scotland. Ha ha ha ha ha!

      The laughter is now beginning to sound a bit hysterical, not a good thing. I don’t think I’ll be able to explain this period to future generations, HS2, Truss, Trump, Johnson, Rees-Mogg, Baverman and assorted wierdos. The oddities of earlier days now seem quite normal – and therein lies danger!

        Exactly! I may not have agreed with previous politicians but I did at least think they had a vague idea how to run a country even if badly. This lot just seem to spout any old lie and hope no-one notices that their “promises” never happen.

      You will one day. Japan is so easy to get around and easy to organise travel. I’ve never felt so comfortable travelling as I did on their metro and their bullet trains. And you can buy one ticket which you can use all over the country on all the trains, buses and, I think, trams. We bought ours before we left here so we could hit the ground running and it made everything so easy. And no pushing and shoving to get on either. Your ticket gives you a seat, a carriage number and a place on the platform where the train will stop for you to get on. Amazing, and we’re still arguing about HS2!

      Absolutely. I was enthralled with the speed, with the revolving seats which allowed me to look through the window without straining my neck, the scenery that flashed by, and the constant supply of wet wipes and drinking water that was offered.
