Sculpture Saturday

Sleeping Child by By Håkon Anton Fagerås.

This sculpture of a sleeping child is said to symbolize Norwegian optimism, survivability, and future life.

The design incorporates a separate pedestal, a rock from Hiroshima’s ground zero given earlier to Narvik by the mayor of Hiroshima. One of three peace sculptures in Narvik it was dedicated in 1956, 1995 and 2006 to remember the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima.

Looking at it for a long time, I’ve decided that what is od about it is that the body is that of a child (not a baby) but the face is definitely a baby, so is that what we find disturbing?

The back story makes the sculpture more meaningful.

I thought so too. The baby itself left me somewhat perplexed!

I guess it evokes innocence and the loss of death of that?

I’m with Anabel- the message is great. The baby? I’m not so sure. Although I remember from visiting Oslo that a lot of the public art and memorials were best described as interesting. Maybe locals have a different take on it?

I agree. I actually found some of the child sculptures a trifle disturbing. The message, great, I’m wholeheartedly behind remembering the terrible things from the various wars, but ………

No one seems to like the baby. It is an odd one and I couldn’t figure out what it was supposed to represent until some students told me. I’m not sure how I feel about it.

The symbolism of the sculpture is wonderful but, if I’m honest, I’m not so keen on the baby…

I like the message – not so keen on the sculpture. Not a very bonny baby somehow.

Oops- nearly missed this one! An old face for a baby but sleeping peacefully. May we all do so!
