The Oldest Byzantine Church in Crete

It definitely was a silent Sunday when we came across this deserted Byzantine church which we later found to be the oldest in Crete. Overgrown with grasses and weeds, it still has charm and I remember well the smell of the herbs underfoot as we explored the near-ruined building.

    A beautiful image. Evokes the smell of wild herbs, sound of crickets and the warmth of the sun on my back. Oh , how I wish!

      Crete is one of my favourite islands as the Cretans are so different and quite unlike other Greeks. They have a fierdce independence, like the Sicilians, and I admire that. I think, being Irish, I feel a connection with this! Lovely Sunday weather and I shouldn’t be indoors but I planned to spend a day reading the papers and catching up on things. Then the computer called, but it’s back to the papers now!

    Lovely church! Imagine the thousands of people who’ve worshiped there over the centuries. Ruins always make me feel somewhat reflective on the fleeting nature of time.

      I share your feelings about ruins. There is something about standing in the midst of a ruined site and feeling the past all around.

        Yes I know it’s hard to know where to go if you only have a few days ..coming from WA our time is always limited when we travel to UK ..can’t have everything
